Chairman Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Distinguished Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita representing Katsina North, has on Tuesday, described as unnecessary the discrimination against Higher National Diploma(HND) Holders in the country.
Addressing journalist at the National Assembly in Abuja, against the backdrop of an establishment Bill laid before his committee seeking to abolish and prohibit dichotomy between University degrees and Higher National Diplomas for the purpose of Employment in Nigeria and other matters connected therewith, senator Baba Kaita said the discrimination is unacceptable.
He lamented the unhealthy treatment being meted to Civil servants both in private and public sectors of the economy, most importantly, those at the entry level, a situation he believed was detrimental to the overall development of the country.
According to the Distinguished Senator " Developed countries like china, South Korea etc places much premium on technical and vocational education and training, hence their advancement in technology and general sciences," he said.
Senator BabaKaita maintained that the undesirable discrimination has really affected a significant number of people which led the agitation for the amendment of the existing laws to calibrate the standard to attain fairness and balance for all graduates.
The bother-less Senator while noting that the process of law making and amendment is long and complex, gave an assurance that the National Assembly will this time around, get it right by passing the Bill prohibiting the existing discrimination between Bsc and HND graduates to give the holder of both certificates an equal status.
