WHY WE SHOULD BE ADAMANT FOR HON. AHMAD BABBA- NO. 1

I wish to us this platform to expressed my view on why we need to x-ray Legislative functions so that this may serve as a basis and sine-qua-non for determining who is worthy of representing us at National Assembly either as house of representative member or Senator as the case may. It is worthy of noting that, representation functions of the legislature, which is one of its major functions in a democracy. Representation largely involves service to constituents by representing their interests in the legislature and providing a direct link to government. The representation function is critical to the long-term sustainability of a democracy. Citizens need to feel that their representatives are listening to them and that their issues will be taken seriously and addressed. However, in Nigeria, many citizens are still missing the link between themselves and their representatives and often express concerns about ineffective representation by their representatives. The legislature is a unique institution in a democratic setting, composed of elected representatives of the people. It occupies a prominent position in modern democracies. The legislative arm of government bears the responsibility not only to make laws which are its primary function, but also to perform other important functions. Thus, the legislature enacts laws, represents the interests of the peoples, is constitutionally empowered to oversee the activities of the executive, safeguards public finances and provides an avenue for redressing public grievances. These roles could be summarized in three basic functions: lawmaking, representation and oversight. Therefore, the lawmaker must: • Be legitimately elected to represent the people, • Be willing to develop and expand his/her knowledge base and sharpen (already acquired) skills to enhance the performance of his/ her job, • Be willing to consult his/her constituents vide town hall meetings or outreach station programmes for feedback, • Know the various competing interests in his/her constituency and strategize on how best to push them through, • Learn to know the workings or operations of government and other environmental factors that will assist his/her effectiveness, • Learn effective utilization of modern communication channels both to put forth the wishes or desires of his/her constituents and publicize government efforts towards alleviating or addressing their specific needs. From the foregoing therefore, I am optimist that, in Kankia-Kusada-Ingawa we don’t have a prevailing democrat that fulfils the aforementioned qualities rather than Hon. Ahmad Babba Kaita. This gentleman have been impacting positively on our day-to-day affairs, particularly in carrying out the aforesaid legislative functions and above in ensuring number of constituency projects are flowing in to our constituency. If we can actually recall, we was represented in those days when we are not politically enlighten as to what Member House of Representative can do to us as constituents. Then, few of us are actually felt the impact of Rep member. However, in Kankia-Kusada-Ingawa federal constituency under ABK able leadership, we are learning what is expected of a member, even though, most of responsibilities shouldering by Hon. Ahmed Babba are actually beyond his capacity as member, some problems deserve Federal Government intervention, some State Government but God So Kind he is able to handle!
